This is a completely and wonderfully functioning piece of art.
Combining my KU Damascus and deep textured forge fullers. This came out so nicely , with the pattern in the high contrast iron oxide and shiny Damascus with the texture and deep set fullers. The geometry came out very well too, with a relatively thin narrow bullet shaped convex bevel, a nice weight and stiffness thanks to the thick spine and rib of the fuller. Cuts with very little resistance.
This is made in a soft cladding Damascus of iron and nickel , a very long finishing process, which culminates in a water quench which allows iron oxide to form only on the iron. It’s a very hard iron oxide and nickel will not tarnish, so a very practical finish.
The combo doesn’t exactly pop on the bevel, due to how fine the pattern, but you can see the hazy nickel lines hiding in the kasumi, very beautiful in person and satisfying to polish further, a hard finisher will bring out more details. I will continue to polish with a Nakayama finger stone.
Handle is a simple but stunning cocobolo wa.
The forging of the fullers as well as the height and profile was done slowly under my power hammer by eye and feel, then cold forged, to get a very fine finish inside the fullers.
There are a couple of whoopsies that I don’t feel detract but need mentioning. A round spot of missing ku, I must have spilled a drop of something acidic on the blade. I have started a patina off on the spot and it will dull with further use. And the tail end of an inclusion between the core and cladding..which was on its way out grinding, but still visible as a darker line at a high polish. It won’t cause any harm if you don’t mind the “character” as the piece is so organic in style. I have included detailed photos to show.

  • Ownership and maintenance with this deep fullered design. It is very easy to polish and work on the bevel, but it is worth putting some thin parcel tape on the blade to cover the mid vein, which can touch if conveying and working with plenty of mud.

Allow a couple of weeks for me to do the very final polish on this one,  and be ready to be shipped.
