This is the first full scale piece from the weapons grade iron I reclaimed whilst on the Isle of Jersey. It is from a french WW1 canon, its is wrought iron but highly purified, folded many many times, its the cleanest iron I have ever seen and remarkably tough. On this piece I have chosen to sword polish the piece with natural stones to show the cleanness of the iron cladding and how it has blended perfectly with the core material. There is very little contrast to the core as the cladding is so refined, but its there, the piece is just too nice to etch I felt and the polishing makes it completely serviceable on your own stones without retching. So this is a very special piece of steel and you know it when you hold and look at it with all its subtle beauty in the surface and in the geometry.
A few things to add, Iron attracts patina faster than steel, it protects itself like this. I would start it on meat and give it a lovely blue patina as this can then be a very practical and serviceable knife.
Or for the stone enthusiast simple enjoy maintaining and enhancing the finish with your stones and natural grit to blend.
Knife Specs
Core steel Carbon 1.2442, Close to blue 1 with more tungsten - around 64hrc
Blade length 280mm
Height - 53mm
Thickness on spine entering handle - 4mm
over heel 3.7mm
Halfway - 2mm
1cm behind tip 0.6mm
Lower compound bevel, very softly hollow above lower bevel to spine. See heel shot.
Thinner into the tip on this one as this iron showed huge torsional strength and resistance to bend than normal mild steel or stainless cladding.
Handle is in Bocote, very striking and a Maple ferrule with brass red and horn spacer. It is a largish handle to balance this substantial knife. Balance is 2cm ahead of heel.
Price includes world shipping comes in a knife bag Or we can have a sheath/box made at extra expense.
