This is a very special piece. Historic iron clad. This amazing material was reclaimed from a ww1 canon barrel, it also has some carbon content and has a spring level of hardness giving the blade stiffness. I have polished the cladding's forge finish and you can see the flow of the grain in the iron, very beautiful.
This piece has fully forged geometry, very hard to achieve and get right, tapers length and bevels taper down and are slightly concave until it meets the ground bevel. This should be considered a heavy knife due to the height and full geometry, It uses its weight so well and cuts beautifully, with an amazing feeling of separation and release of food.
Core steel is 1.2442 carbon @ 65-66hrc. Very hard yet will not chip easily, beautiful to sharpen. I have gone very understated on the handle but wit the finest materials wood is zebrano and the ferrule is bog oak with a white spacer.
Here are some specifications.
Blade length 242mm
Choil length 15mm
Handle - 148mm Handle is on the chunky side to balance this knife.
Balance - Heel plus 15mm
Weight 310g
Blade height at heel is 60.5mm
Geometry spine is 3.6mm entering the handle and tapers evenly to 1.5mm 20mm behind the tip the thins rapidly with the bevel.
The lower bevel is compound ground, very convex at the heel it is 15mm in height and 2mm at its thickest point tapering from there, no resistance above this as it meets the forged hollows.
If you appreciate hard carbon steel, a heavier knife combined with convex fine edge geometry that you can easily maintain this is a very special one and you will appreciate it.
The iron will want to form a patina, and will be very resistant to corrosion once it has blued/greyed with use.
Price include payment fees and shipping comes in handmade knife slip with documentation.
